‘A Boy with Fruit’ from Mudgee 2015 Antique Dry Black Muscat Rose

Hungary have an annual Rose Festival called the ‘Rosalia Festival’. My wife’s Hungarian grandmother was named Rosalia – a connection I just couldn’t avoid on this occasion… “This one is for you Grandma”.

This wine was a pure experiment, involving the black muscat which is used traditionally in Australia for pink moscato and muscat liqueurs.

The very ripe, single-vineyard grapes were foot-trod and hand-plunged for 9 days then pressed off into tank. 100kg of fresh whole bunches were picked and hand-destemmed into the tank and left to ferment and infuse its ‘musky’ aromatics and flavour over winter. The tanks were racked off lees in late November and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It will settle in time.

Tasting Note
The wine has a dark rose almost pinot-esque colour, and the nose is immediately alive with rosewater, fruit-jube, Strawberry, lychee and turkish delight notes in song. The palate while dry and fruity is dominated with a balanced grape-juicy character and liquid musk confection while finishing with mixed red-berry notes and subtle fruit tea tannins. It is supposed to be light, enjoyable and drinkable anytime with barbecue and party food.
